News and Events RACE NIGHT – FRIDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER Our night at the races has already generated so much interest we will be selling tickets soon after half term. It promises to be an exciting event so make sure you don’t miss out. ABOUT THE STOKE COLLEGE PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION Stoke College has a very successful and active Parent Teacher Association. The main aim of the PTA is, of course, to raise money to enhance the school’s facilities for the benefit of all pupils. However, we also like to think that through a varied programme of social events and fundraising projects we help to make Stoke College a friendly, caring and supportive community for pupils, their families and the staff. We are aware that it can be difficult for parents to meet and get to know other parents, so we hope to attract as many parents as possible to the various social events we stage throughout the year. The programme of events varies from year to year, but some events have become so popular that they are repeated annually. We always have new events in the pipeline but, to give you some idea of the type of thing you can expect, listed below are some the events which took place over the past year. CLASSICAL SPECTACULAR CONCERT – NOVEMBER 2006 We were delighted to stage a concert of light operatic and classical music, performed by a number of renowned professional local musicians, who very generously agreed to take part in this fundraising event completely free of charge. We enjoyed a unique ‘Covent Garden’ experience on our own doorstep. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Always held on the second to last Friday before the end of term, this is everyone’s favourite annual event. The children create their own stalls and amusements, so you are never quite sure what you might get! There are a number of stalls to interest the more mature shoppers and refreshments are available so you can sit down, drink coffee and chat while the children are busy. Even Santa puts in an appearance. A fun, and very sociable afternoon. QUIZ NIGHT This is the hardy perennial of PTA events, great fun and not exactly intellectual. The Quiz Night will be held some time during the Spring Term. EASTER EGG HUNT After the Easter Service children hunt for Easter Eggs in the garden whilst parents, grandparents, family and friends partake of tea and cakes in the library. Very civilised. FAMILY BARBECUE The Barbecue is always a lively and fun event which seems to round off the summer term nicely. We still haven’t come down from the 2006 barbecue where pupils performed ‘The Wall - a tribute to Pink Floyd’, which was absolutely tremendous. As well as these major events the PTA runs a number of smaller fundraising projects throughout the year. As a result, during the 2005/2006 year we raised enough money to purchase a large screen TV and DVD player, a shed for the storage of play equipment, and a laptop computer, together with software and other IT equipment. We have also funded the Geological garden near the Science room and donated a substantial sum to the Pavilion fund. During the 2006/2007 year we directed the major part of our fundraising efforts to the Music Department. We have been able to buy two new digital pianos, and pay for repairs and renovations to others. New guitar amplifiers and drum kit parts have also been purchased, giving the school a very well equipped, dedicated band practice room. With the help of a very generous donation from Baxters’ Foods we have been able to install a new public address and sound system in the Sports Hall which will be used for all the School musical productions, concerts, and PTA events. We have also covered the cost of three laptop computers for use in the Junior School, together with other IT and teaching software. The annual camping trip for year 7 and 8 always benefits from some financial help from the PTA, as does the Year 11 Christmas Prom. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to be involved with our efforts. It would not necessarily mean turning up to meetings, any help with an event on the day would be much appreciated. We need a whole range of skills from cake baking to tent erecting, barbecuing to bar work (no previous experience necessary). However, just by turning up at an event parents and friends are doing their bit to help raise money for the school. If you would like any further information please contact me, or any PTA member, through the school office. We aim to make your time at Stoke College as enjoyable as possible and look forward to seeing you at many events in the future.
