The Senior Year

Congratulations, you are about to enter the most important year of your school career to date! During this year you will put the finishing touches to the work you have been doing in your GCSE courses, ending with your GCSE examinations next summer. This is a key foundation to the rest of your life. We expect you to work hard and to take your position as a member of the ‘Senior Year’ very seriously indeed. This is often your first taste of major responsibility. We believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to show just what they are capable of achieving and to demonstrate how they have progressed during their time at Stoke College.

  • Your role in the Senior Year is to set a good example for your peers and younger pupils which will focus on your attitude, behaviour, appearance, dress and effort in all aspects of school life.

  • All pupils in their Senior Year share ‘prefectorial’ duties. Although you may not have specific duties you are never 'off duty' and are expected and encouraged to fulfil your role at all times.

  • Your function is a pastoral one in that it centres on care for other pupils, their welfare, well being and happiness.

  • You are not expected to exert discipline over other pupils beyond common sense and good manners, except when it involves their own health and safety.

  • The role of staff is to support and to encourage, for we know your qualities’, and your potential. You will have direct access to the Headmaster, Senior Teachers, your Tutors or any other member of staff, in fulfilling your role. It is a sign of inner strength, never of weakness, to know when to ask for assistance and guidance.

  • It is a tradition that you help organise and run social and charity events on behalf of other pupils, as well as coordinate the School Council. You will share these responsibilities and be expected to advise the Senior Teachers on matters relevant to such activities.

The Senior Year is led by a team of four (Head Boy, Head Girl and two deputies), who will meet regularly with the Senior Teacher. They will advise on events and the atmosphere within the College and bring to his attention any matter of concern either individually, or as a body. This team is chosen by the Head after consultation with both the teaching staff and pupils in year 10. Qualities of leadership and respect earned so far, as well as being a good role model, will all be taken into consideration.

We hope you will take this opportunity to explore your own personal strengths as well as weaknesses and develop the skills that will be of great use in your life after school.

Enjoy the experience.
