Disability Policy
Admissions and Disabled Pupils
Stoke College welcomes all children who can make the most of the opportunities that we offer and who can flourish in the caring environment of the College. Treating every child as an individual is important to us, and we welcome pupils with disabilities provided that they can access our site and curriculum.
We advise parents of a child with disabilities to discuss their child’s requirements with us before he or she participates in our admissions process so that we can make adequate provision for him/her during that process. Parents should provide a copy of a medical report to support their request, for example, for large print material or other special arrangements.
On Entry
Each pupil with a disability requires special consideration and treatment. If appropriate and reasonable, adjustments will be put in place to meet additional requirements arising from their disability. We will offer to discuss with parents and/or their medical advisers the adjustments that can reasonably be made for their child once they have accepted the offer of a place and before he/she becomes a pupil at the College.
We recognise that some disabled pupils may also require specialist SEN support from our Learning Development Unit, and we would normally discuss this issue with parents before their child enters the College. Copies of our SEN Policy are available from the College Office.
Physical Accessibility
Parents and prospective parents of disabled children may wish to obtain copies of the College’s Accessibility Plan from us before deciding on their admission to the College. That plan details the current level of accessibility of our site and describes how we plan to make our buildings progressively more accessible to disabled pupils, parents and visitors within the constraints of our anticipated resources. The College has an active monitoring policy and will do its best to make adjustments to take account of an individual pupil’s needs, within the constraints imposed by its historic buildings on a scattered site.
Other Adjustments
We will consider making other (non-premises) adjustments for Pupils with disabilities subject to those adjustments being reasonable and, in particular, affordable by the College. When those adjustments are unfortunately not reasonable (in particular when they are not affordable) but a Parent still wishes them to be made, the Headmaster may in his sole discretion agree but may require that Parent to pay for the additional cost.
Our teaching staff receive training on the learning needs of pupils with special education needs and disabilities.
