The Curriculum

The average year in the senior school has about twenty students in it. Maths, English and Science are all taught in two sets per year. The curriculum in the Senior School is very traditional. Top set scientists will end up taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics as single subjects at GCSE. The second set will do Science and Additional Science as two GCSEs. As well as French we ask that students choose four options from History, Geography, Business Studies, Art, Design Technology, Performing Arts (Double Award), Music, PE and ICT. So at the very top end students can take twelve GCSEs whilst others can take eight. Ten is the average.

GCSE results can be viewed on the results page, but our value added measures enable us to say that Stoke students achieve between ¾ and a whole grade better per subject than their peers of equal ability across the country. The College is a completely mixed ability school so some students will, for example, achieve straight A grades and others will be doing extremely well to get five C grades.
