Over the course of the Lent term we have run a highly competitive and intellectually demanding selection process for Mark Wang Sixth Form Scholars. Requiring expected GCSE results of at least seven subjects at grade 8-9, the standard was high and without those GCSE results yet in, we had to run our own series of assessments to allocate places for this over-subscribed scheme. After meeting with potential candidates and their families in six evening webinars from November to January, those who applied completed timed online aptitude tests, followed by two subject tasks using exam.net. These tasks required preparation, research and planning, three skills so crucial to A Level success, and the work produced by students during a national lockdown was all highly commendable. Finally, Dr Lloyd and Mrs Hunn-Smith interviewed all external applicants and followed a scoring matrix to ensure the final allocation of places was as fair as possible.
We are delighted to be welcoming 20 full Mark Wang scholars and more partial scholars as a result of this process. We have finalised our options blocks and are working to a Year 12 of up to 45 students, with 32 already fully signed up. We will be hosting our new joiners for a familiarisation visit on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd April so they can begin to feel like part of the Stoke College community and we know they will be made to feel very welcome here.
